Carmel Trail

land spirits
enshroud the path
with peaceful sea sprites
smelling of sage
a reptilian tree
strangles the cliff,
an ancient protector
of the shore line

here,
the herb that downed Socrates
next to
hard wooden fetuses
that cling to exposed roots
on the bone-elephant tree
moss hangs like beggar's rags
a stone filled hall,
an ancient, nature graveyard,
and the holy bone mountain
passing under a tree-bridge
is thrill alone

egyptian-hero inscribed overhangs,
and waves to surpass the others
humanity
a legend remembered
a fallen Thoreau twig forest
surrounds me completely
includes me
petrified triceratops head
bites the immortal dust:
a sad eulogy for the fallen dead

there
a cave for a Greek god…
or monster
giant, rock, marshmallow land
of the great albatross
silver diamond flowers
survive their rocky mounts
a strange land, the land before
huge branch tentacles
snake through path stairs
in the land of wood giants,
place of pine ladders
straight up to glorious sky
ancient Indian shells,
arrowheads and artifacts

an exquisite collection of surreal cypresses

little spiked balls
line the dirt dust floor
above
the nest of forest pixies
and the ruins of buried sea people
I hear their eternal
harmonious
call:
to rejoice
the divine perfection of life
